Valentia, County Kerry, South West Ireland

It's an island…

It is an island in it's character, it's people, it's remoteness. Yet it is an accessible island, linked to the Ring of Kerry by a road bridge at Portmagee, and - in summer - by a small car ferry at Renard Point. Valentia Island, some seven miles by three, has a population of approximately 600, largely concentrated around the island's two villages; Knightstown on the northern shore, and Chapeltown in the centre of the island's farm land. Crowd-free, traffic-free, noise-free, Valentia nurtures the lost holiday art of "doing nothing!"

Here you can gaze reflectively at the ocean, or wander a winding way, breathing the fresh air which has come especially for you across 2,000 miles of clean, deep sea. The sea breeze is warmed by the Gulf Stream, and so the island enjoys a wealth of sub-tropical vegitation. But the greatest warmth comes from the local people; who will greet you with a smile and a unique wit.

Self-catering cottage

Curlew Cottage is situated by the sea on the Shore Road, about midway between the villages of Chapeltown and Knightstown.

The cottage has been sympathetically restored, accommodating four people in comfort, with breathtaking views of the sea and mountains from within.

The accommodation comprises: porch leading to an open plan kitchen area with all amenities. There is a large, comfortable living/dining area with open views to the sea. The bathroom has a shower and full suite, and there is a separate cloakroom with WC and handbasin. Bedroom 1: double bed, plus a small mezzanine area above with two low level single beds. Bedroom 2: finished in traditional style, with two single beds.

Heating is by storage heaters, and a peat-burning multi-fuel stove in the lounge; perfect to relax by at the end of the day.

Some quotes from our visitors’ book...

“We have had a lovely stay here – the cottage is so cosy, especially with the fire going at night. The views are breathtaking…” Jill and Mark

“We really enjoyed the opportunity to ‘step back in time’, relax, eat well on freshly cooked food, sample the Guinness and enjoy the breath taking scenery!” Keith and Christine Simpson

“What a wonderful place! We’ve had a very recuperating week and will go home refreshed” Liz and Mike Tate

“What a fantastic place this is! Two weeks here has left us refreshed, wanting more and certain we shall be returning to the edge of the world” Jan and John Squire

“It’s going to take a while to work out why this place has worked so well for me. The slate monolith in the garden strikes a chord so it can’t be just about beautiful views – they’ve so exceeded expectations that at times they almost hurt…I shall not forget Kerry!” The Andersons

“Lots of love and care have obviously been put into Curlew Cottage to make it such a pleasant place to come to. We’ve had a lovely, relaxing holiday in a welcoming, comfortable place to stay” Sylvia and Allen Rosier

“Beautiful Island, Rob asked me to marry him! So there must be something in the air! Feel relaxed - you can’t help it here. We plan to marry next year! Ang and Rob - p.s. We will never forget Valentia Island, thank you.

“Fishing, cycling, walking, running, swimming, surfing, snorkelling, bird watching, Valentia watching, boating – we’re exhausted, need a holiday!...” Robin and Barbara Sutton
